Serum

Serums for every skin type.

Believe it or not, there really is a serum for every skin type – from blemished skin to dry skin to dull skin. I highly recommend getting to know the family of skincare active ingredients in serums, such as vitamin C, retinol, salicylic acid, vitamin E, and green tea, to name just a few (my favorites).

It's important to learn about ingredients and active ingredients to understand your skin type and create a routine that not only helps you achieve your skincare goals, but also helps promote a healthy functioning epidermis so you can look and feel your best!

Where should serum be used in my routine?

Serums are skincare products that should be applied after cleanser and before moisturizer. Serums are designed to deliver powerful ingredients to your skin and help you achieve your desired skincare goals. The pores in your skin absorb ingredients from the thinnest to the thickest. Since serums come early in the skincare routine due to a smaller molecular size, proper use will help balance your skin.

To achieve the best results, make sure to optimize the benefits of your chosen serum so you can apply it for maximum absorption. Here is my recommended daily skincare routine:

Step 1: Clean

Cleanse is the first step in your daily skincare routine. Think of cleanser as the ultimate skin refresher, and then apply skincare correctly to replenish.

Step 2: Treat

This is where serums come in. Depending on your skin type, make sure to take advantage of your post-cleanse skin by treating it properly. Now that your skin has been cleansed, it is ready to receive the profound benefits a serum can provide. Simply apply a few drops to the palm of your hand and massage it gently into your skin.

Step 3: Moisturizer

After applying your serum, seal in all that goodness with the right moisturizer for your skin type. Since I'm prone to blemishes, I once thought hydration was the enemy, but little did I know that I was doing more harm than good by drying out my skin and creating an endless cycle of blemishes. So keeping your skin properly hydrated will help reduce excess shine and improve overall skin balance.

How do you choose a serum?

When looking for serums, it’s important to find the right formula for your skin type. If you have oily skin, opt for serums that are on the lighter side and water-based. When formulas are loaded with oils, their molecular size is too large and prevents additional ingredients from reaching deep into the layers of the epidermis. That’s why oils should always be the last step in your skincare routine!

How often should I use serums?

Serums range from daily use to once every few days. And some, like vitamin C, are better for daytime use, while full retinol serums are usually recommended for nighttime use. It all depends on the serum, so always make sure to read the product instructions!

Incorporating a new product into your routine

It's completely normal to be concerned about adding a new skincare product to your routine and what its effects will be. The facial serum you choose will vary depending on your skin's needs. It's best to choose a facial serum that's centered around your most desired results.

If you are sensitive and dry, Rosehip seed oil!

I know it’s not a serum, but let’s get into it. Rosehip seed oil is rich in essential omega-6 fatty acids and can be used for ultimate hydration to cure your dry skin woes. Everyone needs that one skin-friendly ingredient, and rosehip seed oil is definitely mine! This oil can be used to help with skin renewal to rebuild a healthy glow and for antioxidant protection. You can use it daily, both morning and night!

If you want to smooth out the skin texture.

Did you know that retinol is the #1 skincare ingredient recommended by dermatologists? Retinol is potent, but safe for daily use – just be sure to start slowly and do a small area test! There are so many retinoids on the market because of their amazing benefits, such as skin-smoothing properties. Not all retinoids are created equal. Retinol helps improve skin texture while visibly restoring volume.

Whether your skincare goals center around hydration, brightening skin, or anti-aging, there are a ton of serums that can help you achieve your desired look! Whichever serum you choose, make sure to use it regularly—and as directed—to get all the skin benefits it has to offer.

Remember: facial serums have a formula that is easy for the skin to absorb quickly. The formulation not only delivers the serum's active ingredients into the skin, but also paves the way for your skin to absorb the benefits of your moisturizer.

In short, if you want to maximize the benefits of everything you put on your skin, facial serums are the answer!
